Activities of Women Cell 2023-25

Women Cell: A Brief Introduction

  • Women Cell of Dhing College has been an active cell of the college since its inception.
  • This cell is mostly self-funded and the present strength of the cell stands at 12.
  • The main objectives of the cell have been to promote gender equality and empower women in the truest sense of the term.
  • Being situated in a rural set-up, the cell works to overcome social barriers and encourage girls to pursue academic and personal growth through educational and community engagement.

Activity of the Cell Year Wise (2023)

  • Annual Celebration of Women's Day (8th March): Focused on cyber crime and women, followed by screening of a documentary on Jamtara.
  • Extension Activity (18th November, 2023): Visit to women entrepreneurs of Bhoirymbong area in Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya. The daylong visit included meeting and discussing the nature of women-led entrepreneurship in the matrilineal society of Meghalaya. Women from Sumer, Pyllun, and other nearby villages assembled near the State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD), Nongsder, Meghalaya. The interaction shed light on the journey of these small businesswomen who are taught the nuances of entrepreneurship from a very young age.
  • Community Engagement at Batabari LP School, Dhing: Engaged with local women (especially tribal women) and the larger community to discuss their problems and talk about self-reliance, self-help groups, and the role of women. The aim was to make them aware of various avenues available, which was known by the team after their visit to Borapani.

Activity of the Cell Year Wise (2024)

  • International Women's Day Celebration (12.03.2024): Organized in association with Institution's Innovation Council. Speaker: Ms. Gitanjali Goswami, Head of Mathematics Department.
  • Survey in Adopted Villages (23rd-26th February, 2024): Conducted by Women Cell members in association with NSS wing. Dhing College has adopted five villages under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan. Four faculty members and students conducted surveys in four different corners of the college.
  • Pre-Bihu Celebrations (4th April, 2024): Women from adopted villages participated, exhibiting local food products and clothes.
  • Lecture Programme on "Mental Health and Wellness" (5th April, 2024): Organized in collaboration with NSS wing. Resource Person: BK Monika Behenji, Head of Morigaon Branch of Prajapita Ishwaria Brahmakumari Vishwavidyalaya.
  • Career Counseling Session: Organized in association with the Department of English. Speaker: Shyamaly Borkatoky, International Airhostess with Air India and alumna of Dhing College (2018, Dept. of English).
  • Awareness Programme on Menstrual Health and Hygiene: Organized by Unicharm India in association with Women Cell. Attended by girl students of Dhing College. The event aimed to educate students on menstrual hygiene management, break taboos, and promote healthy dialogue about menstrual health.

Activity of the Cell Year Wise (2025)

  • Survey on Mental Health Needs (28th February, 2025): Conducted among girl students in collaboration with Department of Psychiatric Social Work, LGB Regional Institute of Mental Health, Tezpur. The survey aimed to understand mental health needs and existing policies among female college students in Nagaon district.
  • Women's Day Celebration (7th March, 2025): Celebrated in the adopted village of Dhupaguri Kacharigaon. Interaction with local women, who elaborated on their problems on all fronts.
  • Pre-Bihu Celebrations (11th April, 2025): Women from adopted villages participated, exhibiting local food products and clothes.

Conclusion

Since its very beginning, the role of the Women Cell has been instrumental in promoting awareness, empowerment, and support for female students. The cell continues to inspire and uplift women, fostering a culture of equality and opportunity within Dhing College and its surrounding communities.
